What have Americans come to miss the most during their time in isolation at home? Even more than gathering with friends and family, studies show that what we miss the most is dining out at restaurants and bars. While we’re confident that part of the appeal of dining out is sharing the experience with our loved ones, it’s reassuring to those of us in the hospitality industry to remember that in spite of our current fears, we’re inherently social creatures who want to return to normal—or as close to normal as possible.
Insights like this are starting to shape how we think about the next steps for our industry. As we logged in for recent discussions with IIDA and IIDA Illinois, we considered some of the questions that will have to be answered as hotels, bars and restaurants start strategizing their next steps and reorienting for the “new normal” to come. How will hotels approach reopening? What makes this “once-in-a-lifetime” global event different from others we’ve lived through in the past? How can the hospitality industry–and the economy at large—bolster consumer confidence?
